The President of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapists, Rufai Ahmad, has called on the Federal Government to enact laws of inclusion and health for all for people with disability.
Ahmad made the call on Sunday at the launch of books at an event tagged ‘Celebrating the uniqueness in every child’ held in Lagos.
He said, “It is very important that government includes these special children in the society because this is the height of inclusion for everyone.
“It is responsibility for everyone, nobody should be discriminated and without laws made and implemented, there is no way we can have the highest level of inclusion of health for citizens.
“So, I will like to call on the legislators to enact laws for inclusion of people with disability and health for all and for the Federal Government to implement those laws. Some of these laws have been established, some need to be amended while some laws need implementation by the government.”
He also urged parents with children that need special care to consult medical practitioners for advice.
He said, “A book has been written today and it has defined the problems of people with disability and written in a language they will be able to understand.
“There are many children out there with special needs that have potentials but these potentials need to be harnessed for them to be able to help themselves, community and be the great people that God has designated them to be.
“Their potentials cannot be harnessed, unless you know what the problem is and understand the person that has the problem. My advice to parent is that whenever your child has a problem that you think is not normal, consult the medical practitioners, so that they will be able to advise you.”
The author of the books who is also a mum to a child with cerebral palsy, Bukola Ayinde, urged other parents with similar challenges to seek medical care, adding that they needed to be strong for their children.
She added that the parents should not allow the society to dictate what to do with their kids.
